A dreadful first quarter put paid to any hopes New Zealand had of lifting the Netball World Cup. Playing the two-time defending champions Australia in front of a packed Allphones Arena in Sydney, the Silver Ferns were woefully slow out of the blocks. They lost the first quarter 16-7 and, ultimately, the final 58-55. New Zealand won every quarter from there, but it just wasn’t enough. Most of the tearful players were in no mood to talk, as they rushed to the safety of their dressing room. It was up to brilliant goal attack Maria Tutaia to explain what had happened. “We just got a little bit complacent [in the first quarter]. Their pressure on D was a little hard to take,” Tutaia said. “Collectively, I’m so proud of how we’ve come together in this tournament.
