This was the year of the first selfie World Cup, when Germany’s players posed for post-match photos with Angela Merkel and Rihanna. Hey, it’s not every day you get to hoist the championship trophy and drape your arm around one of the world’s most powerful woman. And I’m sure meeting Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, was pretty cool as well. Germany, Real Madrid and Manchester City all had years to remember. Not so much for Spain, Manchester United and just about every club in Italy. Luis Suarez battled Mario Balotelli for the title of soccer’s greatest enigma while Jurgen Klinsmann still can’t bring himself to admit that cutting Landon Donovan was both petty and foolish. Goal line technology was introduced in the World Cup and as my soccer-playing British pal David Thompson says, “Now, they just need simulator technology for flopping.” Not a bad idea. Thierry Henry left us, Frank Lampard and David Villa are coming, but before we look ahead to 2015 let’s first look back at the year that was in football.
