That bested the previous record of 580,166 set during Germany’s 7-1 unmanning of Brazil in the semifinals. The German team did its part to carry the Twitterati to a win. Team players immediately began sending out pictures of themselves celebrating on the pitch — causing a frenzy of retweeting by crazed fans. “AHA!” wrote Lukas Podolski, underneath his selfie with Bastian Schweinsteiger, who gave his teammate a blissful kiss on the check. The candid shot was retweeted more than 88,000 times. Facebook fans also embraced the game, making it the biggest sporting event in the social network’s history, the company said Monday.
