When Sunderland last played at Wembley, eight weeks ago, Max Power could not get into their XI. The Black Cats midfielder has started every game but one since – and even then he came off the bench in the opening half-hour. His first season on Wearside has not run smoothly for Power, a much-heralded signing from Wigan Athletic in August, only to have become something of a liability by November. But Power has hit form as the season has reached its peak, and if it comes about, however it does, his third League One promotion will be something to look back on with huge fondness. Power’s low point came at the Bescott Stadium in November, when he instinctively lunged towards the ball, pulled out of the tackle, but was sent off anyway.
