EAGLE-EYED Manchester United fans have spotted a major flaw in the club’s Treble tribute goalkeeper kit… it’s actually inspired by a kit from two years BEFORE the famous feat. Adidas and United’s marketing spiel claims the new purple and black goalkeeper uniform was inspired by the one Peter Schmeichel wore in the 1998-99 season. They claim on United’s website: “The home goalkeeper jersey has a tiger pattern featuring a dark purple two-tone design, inspired by the top worn by our legendary No1, Peter Schmeichel, during the 1998/99 season.” Except the jersey worn by Schmeichel during that incredible season was actually GREEN.United fans will remember the Great Dane brilliantly palming aside Denis Bergkamp’s FA Cup semi-final penalty in a two-tone green kit with white socks. And he of course lifted ‘Old Big Ears’ alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in Barcelona in May 1999 in the same colours.
