FIFA have announced they have abandoned their plans for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to have 48 nations competing instead of 32. Though the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico will play host to 48 countries and a whopping 80 matches. While Fifa have also confirmed that the 2022 World Cup will only be played in Qatar, shelving plans for it to be expanded across the Gulf. Fifa president Gianni Infantino wanted to increase the number of teams participating in three years time, but was forced to accept that due to time constraints, his proposal wouldn’t be possible. Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin previously spoke of the concerns of adding 16 nations to Qatar 2022, claiming it would create many problems.
