Here we go again. League title number 19, European Cup number 4, and FA Cup number 12 (and the Carling Cup as well if we have time). Of course we are still England’s best team but we may not win all those trophies because this season will be a season of transition. But the club has gone through it before. As Ryan Giggs said the other day, in his time at Old Trafford the club has lost Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Roy Keane, and Ruud Van Ni. Ronaldo, as fabulous as he is, was just another player. He was an arrogant, gelled-up, greasy, arrogant, Portuguese winker, but he was also the greatest footballer in the world. And for all of his antics (flirting with Madrid last summer, throwing a hissy fit after being subbed in the derby, etc.) I loved him. It is impossible to imagine winning the trophies the team has won in the last few years without him. I saw the Remembering Ronaldo show on MUTV yesterday and nearly cried when they showed the Portsmouth free kick (Calamity James was the goalie, and even he probably enjoyed it).
