During the early hours of August 7, 1974 Frenchman Philippe Petit and a small team of his countrymen, a New Yorker and an Australian were putting the final logistics together of a coup he had aspired to for ten years – to walk on a tightrope between the twin towers of the Word Trade Center. This was obviously no mean feat. Not only did Petit and his friends have to negotiate their way (without getting caught) through security, over 100 flights of stairs and nagging doubts that their goal might prove impossible but they also had to consider the very real fact that should things not go to plan Petit might plunge hundreds of meters to his death.Man on Wire is the story of this artistic project, from its conception to aftermath, the title coming from the description in the police report of the incident. It includes interviews with the major players and footage of the planning itself as well as Petit’s previous adventures including a walk over Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
