Supermodel Twiggy, Python Michael Palin and England manager Gareth Southgate are among more than 1,000 people awarded in the New Year Honours 2019. The list celebrates heroes – from 43 responders to terror attacks, to the divers who stunned the world in the Thai cave rescue. But there are also awards for Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter and authors Philip Pullman and Margaret Atwood. And a cronyism row is set to brew after Theresa May rewarded big business chiefs who just happen to back her Brexit deal. There are plenty of famous faces in the honours list – but far more people who quietly work away at doing good for their communities.
