It was a long and rather unedifying day, so let’s run through the major events: • The Senate passed the migration bill, including amendments which would see asylum seekers in need of medical attention removed from Nauru and Manus Island; • However, thanks to some persistent delaying tactics from the government, Cory Bernardi and Pauline Hanson, the bill passed too late to be voted on in the House, which was adjourned at 4:30pm; • That was good for Scott Morrison, who was facing the prospect of overseeing the first legislative defeat for any government on the floor of the House since 1929; • Labor helped the government pass the encryption legislation without any of its proposed amendments, as the alternative was to leave it languishing in limbo until next year; • Emma Husar announced she was suing Buzzfeed for defamation over a story the website published in August; • Tony Abbott delivered his recommendations for boosting attendance in remote indigenous schools, with a focus on attracting more teachers; • Everyone got very cranky. 7:25pm…
