Manchester United were interested in signing former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before David de Gea committed his future to the club, it has been claimed. From the start of the year De Gea stalled on signing a new deal at Old Trafford, causing club executives to sound out potential replacements. The club remained confident throughout the summer window that De Gea would sign on but did receive interest in the Spaniard from Paris Saint-Germain. According to Goal, that triggered United into contacting Juventus over the availability of Szczesny. The Poland international was Arsenal’s first-choice shot-stopper for four years before being loaned out to Roma for two seasons. Impressing in Serie A, in 2017 Juventus picked up the goalkeeper who took the No 1 shirt last term after Gianluigi Buffon left for PSG, although the Italian has now returned to Turin. Szczesny is currently contracted at Allianz Stadium until June 2021 but Bianconeri are now looking to pin him down on a long-term contract in the hope of warding off any interested clubs.
