Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he was never the planned successor for Jose Mourinho, reports say. The Norwegian replaced Mourinho back in December on an interim basis, winning 14 of his 17 matches in charge before being given the job permanently in March. Manchester United have suffered in the time since, however, with Solskjaer now a man under pressure. And the Metro claim Solskjaer believes he was never United’s first-choice to replace Mourinho, instead believing the club wanted Mauricio Pochettino. Tottenham boss Pochettino has long been admired by the United hierarchy with interest going back years. Ed Woodward was tempted to bring him in in 2014, when the Argentine was manager of Southampton. Ultimately, however, Woodward decided to bring Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford instead. When Van Gaal’s time at United started to wind down, Woodward again mulled over whether to go for Pochettino. But he ended up doing a deal with the devil to bring in Mourinho, who won two trophies before being axed late last year.
