NEW DELHI: Standing at the door of the 2020 Olympics, the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams are just two steps away from booking their tickets for Tokyo 2020. The men, led by Manpreet Singh, and the women, captained by Rani Rampal, have set up their tents in Bhubaneswar, waiting to take on Russia and the USA, respectively, in their Olympic qualifiers which start on Friday. At the Kalinga Stadium in the Odisha capital, which is expected to be packed, the Indian teams will take the field on back to back days, on November 1 and 2. The aggregate winners, at the end of two-match qualifier each for men and women, will punch their tickets for the Tokyo Games. Facing 22nd-ranked Russia, the Indian men’s team has a relatively easier task on paper compared to the women, who take on World No. 13 USA. The Indian women have never played in front of a crowd of around 16,000. Add to that a dismal 4-29 win-loss record against the Americans, and Rani and her team do have their task cut out.
