England have now won the football, rugby and cricket World Cups, all after extra-time. And all by fractions. Geoff Hurst’s shot that might never have crossed the line in 1966. Jonny Wilkinson’s last-gasp drop-goal in 2003. And now Jos Buttler whipping off the bails to deny New Zealand’s Martin Guptill a winning run in a super over which was cricket’s answer to the Wacky Races.As Buttler admitted: “I thought I’d seen everything in cricket, but that was ridiculous.” Indeed. Cricket, bloody hell. This World Cup final was tied and the super over was tied too, England only winning by virtue of having struck more boundaries. It was the most extraordinary climax to a game of cricket anyone present had ever seen — yet somehow it was only narrowly the most remarkable contest played at one of London’s great stately homes of sport yesterday afternoon.
