Fifa were accused of causing unnecessary refereeing chaos at the Women’s World Cup on Thursday after Scotland’s heartbreaking exit from a fresh video assistant refereeing (VAR) controversy. A host of figures in the game launched blistering attacks on the world governing body for making the highest level of the women’s game an effective guinea pig for changes in the way penalties are reviewed. Telegraph Sport understands all the teams in France were told prior to the first game that VAR would be used “with increasing rigour” in relation to goalkeepers’ positions. The directive came as a result of a law change by the International Football Association Board clarifying that goalkeepers can now have one foot rather than two on the line as a kick is taken. On Thursday, however, the decision to introduce it in France prompted suggestions of sexism as critics pointed out there was no such order by Uefa for the Nations League Finals in Portugal.
