The big Wales Rugby World Cup selection decisions explained

So, all the waiting is over. We now know the 31 players Wales will be taking to the Rugby World Cup in Japan. And not for the first time in his 11-year tenure as head coach, Warren Gatland has sprung a few surprises. There’s no place for Grand Slam star Rob Evans or fellow seasoned prop Samson Lee, with centre Scott Williams another experienced man to miss out. Gatland has chosen just five props, including rookie loosehead Rhys Carre, which opens the way for an additional back rower in James Davies, amid an 18-13 slot between forwards and backs. Rhys Patchell has got the nod over Jarrod Evans as back-up fly-half, with Hallam Amos edging out Owen Lane in the back three and Owen Watkin preferred to Scott Williams in the centre.
