Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s honeymoon shows no signs of ending. On an entertaining afternoon at Old Trafford, which marked the 25th anniversary of Sir Matt Busby’s death, Solskjaer equalled the best start made by a new manager in the Premier League era as Manchester United recorded a sixth successive league victory under the Norwegian. Only Carlo Ancelotti, with Chelsea in 2009/10, and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City two seasons ago have done the same. United’s caretaker manager will have the opportunity to make the outright best start of the lot by beating Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday week. In truth, this victory should have been more comfortable than it ultimately was. United had the chances to put the game to bed long before Brighton & Hove Albion pulled a goal back through Pascal Gross 18 minutes from time to set up an anxious finish. United were clinging on by the end, Old Trafford taking a collective deep breath when David De Gea made a mess of an attempted punch clear from the umpteenth high ball into the box in the final seconds, but hold on they did.
