Arsenal was enjoying its best week in months, starting with the Gunners drawing Monaco in the Champions League when they easily could have ended up facing Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona. Yes, the Gunners were very lucky and have an opportunity to advance to the quarters for the first time in six years. But on Sunday, Arsenal showed why Arsène Wenger’s club remains an enigma and not a serious threat to challenge for a domestic title as it couldn’t hold a one-goal lead and had to settle for 2-2 draw as Martin Skrtel’s late header provided the tying goal for 10-man Liverpool. Arsenal missed a golden chance to move into a fifth-place tie with Southampton in the Premier League table. Sure, picking up one point on the road is never a bad thing. But Arsenal was facing a Liverpool club that has been vulnerable at Anfield this season and played the final five minutes down a man. Arsenal’s decision to sit back and defend backfired.
